History of Mini Golf
Miniature golf has been a favorite leisure time activity around the world for many decades. The sport originated in the early 1900’s, miniature golf was actually the short game of regulation golf and was played on real grass courses. In the 1920’s & 30’s “rails” or “bumpers” started to appear confining the ball within a boundary and the first man-made putting surface was developed using hard pressed cotton seed hulls which created a smooth putting surface. The sporting game of miniature golf was extremely popular among movie stars and celebrities who helped spawn new courses called “links” across the nation.
Throughout the 30’s & 40’s many new and ingenious obstacles or hazard holes were created by using whatever could be scavenged, such as old tires, wagon wheels, stove pipe, whisky barrels etc.. Some of these backyard and roof top, self-styled miniature golf courses became so popular they became models for the obstacle-laden miniature golf courses that we think of today.
Along came the 50’s & 60’s and the first standardized, mass produced courses began to be built incorporating windmills, miniature buildings, water and indoor/outdoor carpet or Astroturf. The American public was hooked on miniature golf as not only a leisure time activity but also a sporting competition that any gender, any age could compete without handicap or without being a well conditioned athlete.
As miniature golf had now become a popular family sporting/leisure time activity the serious players began holding tournaments. These tournament players demanded that new and improved courses be developed. They were disgusted by what they considered trick shots and obstacles placed only to block the precise putt from going into the hole.
It is this tournament style course that Neal’s mini golf used when designing our holes. Each hole is designed to be challenging yet any player hitting a precise putt can achieve the games ultimate reward, “A Hole in One”.
